    An Insight to Me

Dear Michael,

My full name is Nicolas Alexander Balseca Ona, I was born and raised in Queens, New York. My parents and family from both sides are mainly from Ecuador, a South American Country located on the equator. I have yet to visit Ecuador and most of the knowledge I have of it, come from pictures and my parent’s recollection of their childhood stories. Nonetheless, I consider myself a proud New Yorker, and I love the city and all that encompasses it; the mix of culture, fast-paced lifestyle, and constant noise.  All these things resonate with me and have made me realize that I don’t want to depart from it.

At the moment, I am a sophomore at the City College of New York studying as a biology major. As a student here, one of my main goals is to take advantage of all the opportunities this institution has bestowed upon me so I can be ready to take on the rigorous challenge that is expected with dental school. CCNY has all the prerequisite courses and opportunities to get involved in dental work, like dental shadowing; all these components go into the preparation that I want to acquire to build a strong foundation for dental school and beyond in my profession as a general dentist.

In terms of how this class can further my goal progression, writing for the sciences provides me with the foundation in my profession I was talking about earlier. To expand, this course exposes me to complex pieces of scientific literature and the driven focus is to enhance analytical ability and comprehension. In the future, I will come across countless scientific papers and it’s important that I be able to take out the information presented to me, in my field new information is constantly being provided and I need to be able to process that for myself. In addition, this course outlooks the right and less favorable approaches when making an academic paper, and eventually, if I were to write on my own, I would have some proper navigation on how to do so, in the correct fashion.

The field of science I’m pursuing is clinical medicine, more specifically dentistry. Since a very young age I have been interested in the medical field, but that is a field that has a plethora of branches within it. In my senior year of high school, I was given the opportunity to work in a hospital, where I requested to work in the dental department. It was this experience that solidified my interest in dentistry, I really enjoyed the patient interaction day by day, and me being a hands-on person, I am very fond of the idea of utilizing multiple apparatus to improve people’s well-being. Overall, in the field of study, my ultimate goal would be to own my own firm in New York City. Like I mentioned in the beginning, I plan on staying in New York for the long run, this is where I will build everything, I have envisioned for myself. A dental firm in NYC is no small task, taking into consideration the renting space, employees, utilities, etc. However, with the years of involvement, I partake in the dental field I shall have the information and in the foreseeable future the funds, to have a practice of my own that I could manage. This is a small look into a Queens-raised kid looking to make it in a city he cherishes.

                                                                                                       Sincerely,

                                                                                            Nicolas A. Balseca Ona
